Description

Buddhism & meditation in the English Lake District
Located at the southern end of the English Lake District, Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre provides a peaceful and inspiring environment in which people from all walks of life can learn about Buddhism and meditation.

Open to everyone, the centre provides a year-round programme of meditation classes, courses, and retreats that offer practical advice on how to apply Buddha's teachings to our daily activities.

Improving the quality of life
By practising Buddha’s teachings, or Dharma, we protect ourself from suffering and problems. All the problems we experience during daily life originate in self-grasping ignorance, and the method for eliminating this ignorance is to practise Dharma.

Practising Dharma is the supreme method for improving the quality of our human life because the quality of life depends not upon external development or material progress, but upon the inner development of peace and happiness.

Kadampa Buddhism

Manjushri Centre was founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, who has lived and taught at the centre for over 30 years. It is the Mother Centre of a global network of over a thousand centres and groups that follow the Kadampa Buddhist Tradition.

The central office of the New Kadampa Tradition is based at Manjushri Centre, and a number of international Buddhist projects are run from the centre.

Buddhist Temple
The centre is the site of the first Kadampa Buddhist Temple. This inspiring building, which is based on traditional Buddhist architecture, is open for everyone to visit.

Books on Buddhism & meditation
Manjushri Centre is also the home of Tharpa Publications UK, which publishes books by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Books on Buddhism and meditation, meditation CDs, Buddhist art, and other meditation supplies are all available from the centre shop.

Open to the public
The centre is based at Conishead Priory, an historic house set in 70 acres of grounds on the shores of Morecambe Bay. It is open to the public daily throughout the year, including a Gift shop and bookstore and woodland walks to the Bay. In season, at week-ends and Bank Holidays, guided tours of the house and Temple are offered and the Conservatory Café serves light lunches and other refreshments.
